Agus Martowardojo was appointed minister of finance in Indonesia in May 2010. He began his banking career at Bank of America, then joined Bank Niaga in 1986, rising to the positions of vice-president of corporate banking and group banking head over the ensuing eight years. In 1995, he was appointed president director of Bank Bumiputera, and became president director of Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia (Persero) in 1998. From 1999 to 2002, he served as a managing director of Bank Mandiri.In October 2002, after briefly serving as adviser to the chairman of the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency, he served as president director of Bank Permata until 2005. From May 2005 to May 2010, he served as the president director and CEO of Bank Mandiri (Persero).

He has served as chairman of the advisory board of the Indonesian Bankers Association (IBI) since early 2011 and as chairman of the advisory board of the Indonesian Banks Association (Perbanas) since 2009. He is also a member of the consultative board for the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). He has held several top positions in banking associations such as Himbara (State-Owned Banks Association), IBI and Perbanas.

Mr Martowardojo holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Indonesia. He has completed banking, management and leadership courses at the State University of New York, Harvard Business School, Stanford University, the Institute of Banking & Finance in Singapore and the Wharton Executive Education programme.
